The Government of National Unity (GNU) 2024 is a historic coalition government formed after South Africa’s recent elections. This unprecedented union brings together 10 political parties from across the spectrum to address the country’s severe challenges. The GNU is built on a Statement of Intent, which outlines the shared values and principles of the coalition. These principles include respect for the Constitution, non-racialism, social justice, and human dignity.

A civic training workshop on the GNU was held at Akanani Center in Elim on the 19th of August to empower community members, especially youth, by unpacking what is meant by the Government of National Unity and what it may have in-store for citizens. More than 100 participants attended this event that was hosted by VFP and facilitated by Freedom House. The following was touched in the workshop and participants showed interest as they began understanding how this coalition government functions.

Key Priorities of the GNU:

  • Inclusive Growth and Job Creation: Drive economic growth, create jobs, and support small businesses.
  • Reducing Poverty and the High Cost of Living: Address poverty, inequality, and the high cost of living.
  • Building a Capable, Ethical, and Developmental State: Strengthen state capacity, improve governance, and promote accountability ¹.

The GNU has also committed to a National Dialogue, which will bring together stakeholders from across society to discuss critical challenges facing the nation ¹.

Overall, the Government of National Unity 2024 represents a significant shift in South Africa’s politics, as parties put aside their differences to work towards a common goal of building a better future for all South Africans ² ¹ ³.
