Introduction

Vumbanani for Peacebuilding (VFP), together with other 34 civil society organisations in Limpopo Province attended a capacity building workshop in Polokwane at Royal Hotel from the 15th-17th of March 2026.

A capacity-building workshop was successfully conducted to strengthen the operational effectiveness of Non-Profit Organizations (NPOs) who affiliate with the Civil Society Unmuted Coalition (CSUC) in Limpopo. The workshop focused on key areas including compliance, collaboration, professionalism, governance, and strategic planning. It brought together representatives from various organizations with the aim of enhancing their knowledge, skills, and institutional practices.

Objectives of the Workshop

The main objectives of the workshop were to:

  • Improve understanding of legal and regulatory compliance requirements for NPOs
  • Promote effective collaboration among organizations and stakeholders
  • Enhance professionalism in organizational conduct and service delivery
  • Strengthen governance structures and accountability mechanisms
  • Equip participants with tools for strategic planning and sustainable growth

NPO Compliance

Participants were guided through the legal frameworks governing NPOs by a representative from the Department of Social Development (DSD), including registration requirements, reporting obligations, and financial transparency. Emphasis was placed on the importance of compliance in maintaining credibility and avoiding legal risks. The new DSD website platform for registeration of new organisations and uploading reports and or, other documents concerning individual organisations.

Collaboration

The workshop highlighted the value of partnerships and networking among NPOs. Discussions focused on resource sharing, joint initiatives, and building strong stakeholder relationships to maximize impact.

Professionalism

Facilitators stressed the importance of ethical conduct, clear communication, and accountability in all organizational activities. Professionalism was linked to improved trust from donors, beneficiaries, and partners.

Governance

Sessions on governance covered roles and responsibilities of board members, leadership structures, and decision-making processes. Good governance practices were emphasized as critical for transparency, accountability, and long-term sustainability.

Strategic Planning

Participants were introduced to strategic planning frameworks, including setting goals, defining vision and mission, and developing actionable plans. The importance of monitoring and evaluation was also discussed to ensure progress and impact.

Participation

The workshop was attended by representatives from 35 various NPOs in the 5 districts of Limpopo, including managers, and program officers. Active participation was observed through group discussions, case studies, and practical exercises.

Outcomes and Impact

The workshop achieved the following outcomes:

  • Increased awareness of compliance requirements
  • Improved understanding of governance and leadership roles
  • Strengthened commitment to professionalism and ethical practices
  • Enhanced capacity to develop and implement strategic plans
  • Encouraged collaboration and networking among participants

Challenges Identified

Some of the challenges highlighted during the workshop included:

  • Limited resources for compliance and reporting
  • Weak governance structures in some organizations
  • Lack of strategic planning skills
  • Limited collaboration among NPOs

Recommendations

Based on the discussions, the following recommendations were made:

  • Continuous training on compliance and governance
  • Strengthening board capacity and leadership structures
  • Encouraging partnerships and collaboration among NPOs in CSUC
  • Developing clear strategic plans with measurable goals
  • Establishing monitoring and evaluation systems

Conclusion

The capacity-building workshop was a valuable initiative that addressed critical areas affecting the performance and sustainability of NPOs in Limpopo. Continued efforts in training and collaboration will further strengthen the sector and improve service delivery to communities.
